Business Development for Cooperative Societies

Many cooperative societies in Nigeria remain small and financially fragile because they lack the business development skills to grow. This course teaches cooperative leaders and administrators how to identify income-generating opportunities, write fundable business proposals, develop strategic plans, and present their cooperatives value to investors and government partners. Participants will also learn how to evaluate new ventures, manage business risk, and position their cooperative for long-term sustainability and growth. The curriculum is intentionally practical, drawing on tools and frameworks adapted for the realities of small cooperative budgets and volunteer-led leadership. Topics include: opportunity analysis tailored to cooperative mandates and member capabilities, writing a credible business plan that addresses funder concerns about governance and capacity, the components of a strong investor pitch and what banks and development partners look for, simple strategic planning tools such as SWOT analysis and goal-setting, action planning for cooperative growth in twelve-month and three-year horizons, evaluating risk in new ventures including market, operational, and reputation risks, structuring partnerships with offtakers, suppliers, and government agencies, and case studies of cooperatives that successfully transitioned from member-savings clubs to revenue-generating enterprises. The closing assessment exercises every framework introduced in the course.
