Cooperative Financial Records and Reporting

Sound financial management is the backbone of any sustainable cooperative society. This course equips cooperative treasurers, accountants, and administrators with the practical skills to maintain accurate financial records, prepare income and expenditure reports, manage member savings and loan records, and conduct internal audits. Participants will learn how to use standard bookkeeping tools, prepare balance sheets, and present financial information clearly to members and regulators. The course also covers common financial mistakes made by Nigerian cooperative societies and how to avoid them. Topics include: double-entry bookkeeping fundamentals applied to cooperative societies, recording member savings contributions, loan disbursements, and repayments, preparing the income and expenditure statement and balance sheet at year end, building an annual cooperative budget aligned with member needs, internal audit committees and red flags for irregularities, financial controls and segregation of duties, regulatory reporting expectations from the Lagos State Ministry of Commerce and Cooperative Development, and case studies of common pitfalls observed across cooperative societies operating in South-West Nigeria. By the end of this course, treasurers and accountants will be equipped to keep cooperative books that withstand both regulatory audit and member scrutiny.
