Introduction to Cooperative Management

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to cooperative management for individuals entering the cooperative sector or seeking to strengthen their foundational knowledge. Learners will explore the origins and evolution of cooperative societies, the seven internationally recognised cooperative principles, and the legal and regulatory framework governing cooperatives in Nigeria. The course also covers the roles and responsibilities of cooperative officers, member relations, and the basics of cooperative governance. By the end of this course, participants will have the knowledge required to operate as informed and effective cooperative administrators. Topics covered include: the global cooperative movement and its historical development, the application of cooperative principles in Nigerian contexts, federal and Lagos State legal frameworks for cooperative societies, governance structures and the duties of officers including chairpersons, secretaries and treasurers, member onboarding and engagement strategies, dispute resolution and conflict management within cooperatives, and best practices for transparent operations. Each module includes practical examples drawn from Nigerian cooperative societies, with particular emphasis on the experiences of cooperatives operating across South-West Nigeria and Lagos State. The final module offers a comprehensive assessment to validate learners understanding of all foundational topics.
